4 Top Causes of No Starting

4 Top Causes of No StartingThere are few things as frustrating as a car that won't start. For a car owner, this is obviously going to cause a hiccup in your day. While you wait for a tow truck to take your vehicle to a local auto repair shop, you may be wondering, "Why won't my car start?" Without knowing the symptoms it can be difficult to determine the trouble. However, if there is any good news in the situation, it is that many no start problems are relatively simple fixes. These are four common reasons that a car will not start.

Dead Battery

A dead battery is the most common reason any type of vehicle won't be able to start. While batteries can and will die at some point, usually between 3 and 5 years of use, it is also likely that your battery died due to leaving your lights on when the car is off or some other driver error. If electronics, like lights or the radio, are used for too long when the engine isn't running then the battery's power will be drained, thus making it impossible to start your car without a jumpstart. The good news is that once you're back up and running the alternator will be able to recharge the battery.

Bad Alternator

As mentioned, it is the alternator that keeps the battery charged. It is able to do this because the alternator generates electricity from the spinning motion of the engine. This electricity is also used by other systems in the car as the engine runs. If the alternator begins to fail you'll likely have trouble operating electronics throughout the car. Signs of a failing alternator include dim or flickering headlights or problems with power windows or the radio. Once the alternator fails completely the battery will be drained and the car will be unable to start.

Failed Starter

The starter motor is what gets the engine spinning when the key is turned (or the button is pushed). If the starter motor fails it is likely that you will hear a loud click or a series of clicks when you try and start the car. This is the sound the starter motor makes if it is actuating but not spinning.

Fuel Delivery Issue

If gas can't get to the combustion chamber the car will be unable to start. There are three primary issues that can arise with the fuel system that could cause no starting. They are a failed fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter or a malfunctioning fuel injection system. Proper diagnostics will need to be run to determine the exact issue your car is suffering from.

If you begin to have hard starting issues don't delay a trip to the mechanic. If you wait too long, your car won't start at all.
